Slither Pro - Commodore 64
A downloadable game
Slither is a Centipede-style game made from leftover bits and bobs from another project I worked on. The Centipede doesn’t exactly glide smoothly; it’s more like a robot with two left feet, moving one character at a time. The game was originally meant to be a stepping stone for a much bigger game (you know, back when I had dreams of grandeur).
Slither Pro is basically the same game, except it came with a training simulator that I abandoned because, well… let’s just say it was about as polished as a rusty nail.
The game features music by Richard Bayliss and sprite art by Hend—two legends in their own right.
Trivia Time!
The game had three levels of protection. No cracking group had managed to bypass all three. It was only after I made the protection known that they re-released it. Crackers won't pay for your game (even $1.00) but they'll certainly spread their version of your hard work.
I’m releasing the full source code and a fully working trained version. Why? Because you know you’re going to want those cheats—even though you'll never use them.

Nice! :-)
Nice game. I liked the training simulation part, where you take on a giant bug and attempt to defeat it. I also like the second part of the game (the main game) which is a great homage to Centipede. The game is playable, and very challenging. I would love to see a front end presentation with logo and hi score table/detection, but of course I cannot ask for everything ;) Well done.
Good game, I enjoyed playing it, thanks. I added it to my new "Gameplay of New C64 Games from May 2025" video along with other recently released games. I hope you enjoyed the video.
Not bad and i always liked Centipede and clones of it. But one thing is a bit strange. When starting the game, then the user initially hears neither FX nor music, during the gameplay. That's a bit confusing, you could even consider this a bug or something like that, because you don't always have the itch.io manual-text for the game, that describes what to do with F5. Months later, this can be forgotten and you then no longer have this text and then the user must find this out by himself. At some point, you might get the idea, to try out the F keys and then you realize, that you can use them to activate the music or FX. Or maybe you never find this out and you think that it's normal to have no FX and no music in this game.
Wouldn't it be better, if (1) at least the FX were active by default, instead of not hearing anything at all, and (2) wouldn't it actually be better, if you could also choose between FX and music, directly in the game-menu (where you can choose between joystick and keyboard controls)? A text there could explain the F-keys and their function on the audio-settings.
You may like the Pro version then.
Where can this version be found? But actually, I don't think you need any other version, the FX should just be switched on by default and not deactivated. Not hearing FX and also no music by default, is a bit strange, because no other game on the C64 does this. One of the two, is always preset.
The file was updated, same place to download.
Nice, thanks for implementing. One suggestion more, for future versions of the game. The shield is on the Commodore-Key, i saw. It could additionally also be on Fire-2 (Pot-x) and also on Space-bar. The reason, this might make sense, is, that there are some controllers for the C64, that have a Fire-2 button (ArcadeR joystick, Cheetah Annihilator joystick, etc). And there are also adapters, that allow you, to have the Space-bar (respectively the fire on joyport-1) on a button on a connected MegaDrive joypad for example, such as the GenAssister, which connects to both joyports of a C64 at once, etc. It's very good for many shooters, that have a function on the Space-bar. If the Shield function in Slither could be triggered by Space-bar and also by Fire-2 (Pot-x), this would cover all of these adapters and controllers then. Then those players, who owns one of these hardware, would no longer have to reach for the keyboard, to be able to use the shield function in the gameplay, but would have this function directly on a button on their controller. Just a suggestion of course, but i think, it could make sense. And the Shield can additionally still be on Commodore-key too. In some emulators it already works very well now. In those C64-emulators, that allow the user, to map keyboard-keys to a controller (for example Denise, HOXS, CCS64), you can map either the Commodore-key or the Space-bar (if that happens) to a button on the controller.
Thank you! :-) Slither (2025, Milasoft)
Thank you for the support.
Nice game!
Thank you. I know it's not the most addictive, but I think the retro enthusiasts will appreciate.
